Also known as canal ocho (8), VTV was for decades the solitary state channel. To counter the media offensive of Globovision and private newspapers, VTV is now increasingly focused on news and opinion.

 02 • ViVe Televisión :: www.vive.gob.ve

ViVe is the second state channel, generally reserved for culture, education, and coverage of the revolution. As with VTV, Chávez speeches and live events take priority over the normal schedule.

 03 • TeleSUR :: www.telesurtv.net

TeleSUR is a new pan-Latin American network based in Venezuela, and co-owned by 7 other countries, including Cuba and Argentina. It aims to challenge Western media hegemony in the region.

 04 • Globovisión :: www.globovision.com

Globovisión is now the last national free-to-air channel dedicated to opposing to Chávez and the revolution. The phone-in talkshow Aló Ciudadano (“Hello Citizen”) is from 5-8pm on weekdays.

 05 • Asamblea Nacional TV :: www.antv.gob.ve

ANTV is a third state channel, launched in 2005 to cover the proceedings of Venezuela’s National Assembly. It also broadcasts a mixture of cultural, informational and other content.

 06 • Isla TV :: www.islatv.com

Isla TV is primarily a news channel, also covering topical interests and sports. It broadcasts in the state of Nueva Esparta, which includes the well-known holiday island resort of Margarita.

 07 • Canal-i :: www.canal-i.com

Canal-i is recently-launched station specializing in news and informational programming. It attempts to project an impartial image, with presenters and opinion from the left and the right.

 08 • TV Comunitaria del Oeste :: www.catiatve.org

Catia TVe was created in 2001 by residents in the neighborhood of Catia, in the capital city. 70% of its programming is now created by community organizations in the barrios (poor neighborhoods).

 09 • Promar TV :: www.promar.tv

Promar TV broadcasts 24 hours a day from Barquisimeto in the North-eastern state of Lara. The programming covers information, opinion, entertainment and sports in a Westernized format.

 10 • Somos TV :: www.corporacionsomos.com

Somos TV also broadcasts from Barquisimeto, and is part of the 15-channel Venezuelan National TV Circuit (formed in 2007), which shares regional content across the country. General content.

 11 • Televisora de Oriente :: www.tvo.com.ve

Funded in 1992, TVO can be seen in the states of Anzoátegui, Monagas, Nueva Esparta, Sucre, Miranda and Guarico. Its programming covers the spectrum of general interests.

 12 • TVS :: www.tvs.net.ve

TVS first aired in 1994 and continues broadcasting in Maracay state despite attacks against two reporters in 2004 and the kidnapping (later assassination) of its founder in 2006.

Urbe TV is a channel broadcasting in Zulia state, a region dominated by the opposition. Urbe’s news/opinion caters for this audience, and more generally in other content.

 14 • Anzoátegui TV :: www.anzoateguitv.com

Anzoátegui TV is a channel broadcasting from Barcelona, the capital of Anzoátegui state. It’s been on air since the general election of December 2006.
